Branch County Trail Towns

Gateway of the Chain Lakes

Quincy is a delightful small town characterized by the turn of the last century brick buildings that line its downtown. The area was originally settled in 1830 by Horace Wilson, who constructed the first log cabin in the vicinity. When the community later split from the adjoining Coldwater Township, it required a unique identity. Local doctor Hiram Allen suggested the name Quincy as a nostalgic tribute to his own hometown in Massachusetts.

The town’s heritage is meticulously preserved by the Quincy Historical Society, which recently renovated its museum space inside a former Seventh Day Adventist Church on East Jefferson Street. The Society places a particular focus on collecting and sharing oral histories to keep the voices of the past alive. Visitors and gardening enthusiasts can also explore the museum’s newly landscaped grounds, which feature a curated collection of vintage plantings reflective of the region’s botanical history.

No visit to the area is complete without experiencing Marble Lake, widely considered one of the crown jewels of Branch County. This 800 acre body of water is part of a massive 17 mile chain of lakes encompassing over 2,700 acres of interconnected waterways. It serves as a premier destination for sportsmen and women, offering extensive opportunities for fishing, kayaking, swimming, and general recreation in a scenic natural setting.
